How to Choose Coloured contact lenses

By

During my days as a student studying for my O’ levels I have been quite consumed by the desire and soon giving that desire fulfillment by wearing coloured contact lenses. I suppose any girl who has naturally dark eyes, like dark brown or black, at times wishes that her eyes were of a different colour. And thanks to the era we were born in, we can actually help in the situation. I am not saying that dark eyes aren’t wonderful, in fact now that I have matured; my need to constantly change the colour of my lenses has ebbed to a point that I rarely wear contact lenses. Anyway, that is besides the point.

Choosing the right colour:

Coloured contact lenses come in various shades and it is sometimes difficult, especially for first time users to choose which colour to wear. Although I am aware that those who buy contact lenses, usually have a preconceived notion that a certain colour will look great on them, or that they wish to wear a particular shade of green or blue, it is not always the case that that colour will look great on them. However, there is a way that even colours that you are dying to wear but feel like it would not suit your skin colour or face structure can be worn beautifully if worn together with the right eye makeup. It needs to be realized that coloured contact lenses usually needs to be worn with a bit of eye makeup to blend the colour with your skin and face to make it seem natural. Wearing coloured contact lenses with no makeup is usually a disaster as it generally looks out of place. I am not asking you to wear tons of makeup, perhaps just a little kohl under and around the eyes or a little shimmery eye makeup with black mascara. Try to refrain from wearing green eye shadow with green contacts and blue with blue contacts unless you know your way around the makeup department.

Dark and milk chocolate skin:

Although most people have a predetermined idea that dark skinned people should not wear coloured contact lenses of a lighter shade, I beg to differ. Honey or Autumn, which has a beautiful bright glow to it, are great colours for dark skinned girls. It adds mischief to the eyes and gives a tiger like quality. If you want a cooler look, you can also go for misty grey or amethyst, they are both colours with a cold undertone, it adds sexiness to the eyes. Shades of green and blue can also be worn but try not to steer towards bright shades of green or blue, go for a subtle look by choosing dark shades of green or blue as it will blend it well.

Olive or tanned skin:

Going for bright shades is a good idea. Make your eyes shine by going for a bright shade of green as it would be the best choice for you. Try not to wear green makeup with green contacts as it will dull your eyes. However, shades of blue should be avoided. Other colours to consider are honey, hazel and grey. Navy blue coloured contact lenses look fantastic too if you are planning on a subtle change.

Colored contact lenses

amethyst
amethyst

Fair skin:

Blues and grays are great shades for you. Honey should be avoided as the mischief that usually comes with honey does not usually suit girls of a fairer shade as the skin is too light to carry out the playful mischief with the eyes. Just go for bright and shiny colours. Turquoise and Carrabin aqua are colours that give fair people the freshness of the ocean and looks great when worn with white clothes. Purple and amethyst look fantastic on fair skin as it gives an innocent look that blends with the fair skin. Only really fair people can honestly wear shades of violet without any makeup and yet make it seem so beautifully natural.

For all skin colours:

Going for contact lenses that have three rich shades blended together is great for all skin colours. Again, there are actually no fixed rules that anyone needs to follow. Try to take chances and try out new colours.

Thanks for the tips here upon choosing the right color of contact lens. Now I know the importance of lenses and its color on where and how to use in the eyes. A very useful hub to read on.

K Kiss 15 months ago

@Hanna Marie: you should definitely consider black contact as you already have blue coloured eye...it will be a shocking change to go black.

tcstix 15 months ago

Yes, good Hub. Green colored contact lenses tend to look good with people that have darker skin. A good combination.

sameen 11 months ago

K Kiss 8 months ago

I agree with you tcstix, green contacts are indeed my absolute favourite!.

thanks sameen for stopping by at my hub.

Taher kapadia 7 months ago

what colour lens should go, with a dark face...??

K Kiss 7 months ago

honey or autumn coloured contacts will give mischief to the eyes contrasted against dark skin and grey or amethyst will give a cooler vibe. Green looks great on dark skin too and gives a wood nymph type vibe.

Jin Karia 7 months ago

yayyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!! so i can wear green contacts. i kinda want mine bright though :(

K Kiss 7 months ago

I am glad my hub helped you decide Jin Karia.

Dark eyes 7 months ago

I have a wheatish complexion and my eyes n hair are the darkest shade of brown. I want contacts for parties, not daily use. I want to look different, but at the same time,I don't completely want to stand out. What shade is good for me?

K Kiss 7 months ago

Dark eyes, you might consider wearing silvery ash contacts as they would give you the kick for a party yet at the same time harbour near reality. Ash generally sits very well on dark eyes as well.

K Kiss 7 months ago

Dear Pinky, what what I have gathered from your description of yourself it seems like that honey would go wonderfully with your recently highlighted hair and skin tone. You can also go with Aqua coloured contacts which will give your face a very mischievous touch. Brown, Honey and hazel are safe colours which also look great with your complexion and hair. Hope I was of any help.

I have rather pale skin, black hair, and very dark eyes, leaning towards black. This article was very helpful, but I still am going to get what i prefered-green contacts. I thought green would like very nice with dark hair, and many people with dark hair tend to get blue. Green is different from blue, and I tend to see mostly blue and brown eyes.

Hasnahana pramanik 6 months ago

ih've a dusky skin. so what color lens should go? reply me on hasna.inft@gmail.com

Monica 6 months ago

My skin colour is tanned (asian) I've wore green contacts in the past and they looked really nice, it actually did suit me but; however i would like to wear some other colour that would look better/natural on my skin tone and would stand out too, i hope that someone can contact me and reply to my message.

Thankyou

K Kiss 6 months ago

@Yvonne: you made a good decision. Green will indeed look great with your black hair. Green and black is a classic combination.

@Monica:- with tanned skin icy-ash looks very cool and foxy especially if your outline your eyes with black kohl. On a warmer tone you may go for honey which blends beautifully with tanned Asian skin.

bm 5 months ago

hello,my skin colour is fair brown?so what colour of lens shud i wear so that i will looks attractive and sexy eyes in group of people??thnk u for ur reply.. :)

K Kiss 5 months ago

@bm: colours like misty grey, forest green, violet, electric blue and even jet black are all sexy contact lens colours for fair brown people

Jinia 5 months ago

Does the pearl gray suits the dark skinned people?

K Kiss 5 months ago

Honestly speaking Jinia, pearl grey is a tricky colour for anyone. I believe that it's all about the right eye makeup and the person who carries it that makes wearing pearl grey contacts work or not work. Either it will look fantastic or it might look like something out of Halloween. I myself tread carefully when wearing such colours.

first timer 5 months ago

I just wanna start using contacts and I've got a chocolate brown skin with black hair.what colour of contacts wuld make me look really hot nd sexy

K Kiss 5 months ago

My suggestion is that you go for jungle green. I think Bausch & Lomb makes them. Alternatively you can go for hazel or honey for a warmer tone.

jojo 5 months ago

i am quite brown and i was wondering if grey would go

K Kiss 5 months ago

It will go provided that you wear the right makeup with it. One thing is for certain, the striking contrast will produce a striking outcome. However, if you go for a dark grey it will blend in and just give a sparkle to your eyes. But if you go for a light grey like misty grey it will be on the icy side and an eye catcher.

Thank you lia for leaving such a nice comment. Hazel does give a very doll like look and I am glad that it suited you too. :)

vivi 4 months ago

That was very helpfull;-)

I have a fair skin, with brown hair im in a dilemma between choosing grey or blue lenses?

What do you think?

Allison 4 months ago

I have Kinda tan kinda white skin and I was wondering is a grey nice for me?

K Kiss 4 months ago

Dear vivi, with fair skin and brown hair blue lenses would look very pretty and give you an almost doll like aura provided that you choose a bright and lively blue. If you were to choose a dark blue it gives the eyes depth and makes others wonder whether the eyes are black or blue which adds to the mystery.

Grey contacts would also suit fair skin but since you have brown hair it might conflict. Since I do not know the exact share of your hair I will not be able to give you my advice properly. Grey contacts generally go very well with black hair and also blonde hair. Brown hair usually have a reddish base which conflicts with the ice-ness of the grey contacts. However, a darker grey would go well with your complextion. You will have to decide what kind of look you are going for. Hope that helped.

Dear Allison, the comment regarding the grey contacts that I gave to vivi would hopefully answer your query. :)

Heyy

my skin colour changes :\ when im outside im realyy fair and sometimes im light brown

my haircolour also changes from a light brown to dark depends what i wear

i dnt wear eny makeup except mascara as i have smallish kind ov eyes i want my eyes to look bigger and stand out what colour contacts would suit me i seem to really like the colour grey but the freshlook contacts have colourblend which is grey with brown but i want a solid light grey kind ov colour

thanks

K Kiss 4 months ago

Dear Saphh, Freshlook does make one in grey with only grey tones called Misty Grey (it is quite light in shade). Bright colours like bright green and Honey make the eyes look much bigger then they are. With Brownish type hair shares of green and honey/hazel go really well.

hey.. i am planning to get my first pair of lens. And my skin color is brown and have small eyes and my hair color is black.so will hazel brown will suit my eyes. And my eyes are naturally black.

K Kiss 3 months ago

Hello shabrien, hazel is one of my favourite colours for contact lens, second only to green contacts. Hazels suits almost all skin colours and especially brown or darker skin tones as it then adds a very mischievous look. Hazel colour shows well on black eyes, I myself have naturally black eyes and Hazel covers that up nicely. I tried Freshlook's hazel.

I would like to get my first lens for my sister's wedding. Can u plz suggest what color lens would best suit me?? Also, can i wear a lens even if i don't have power??

reshmi 3 months ago

hii am havng taned skin n havng slight brown shaded eyes n my hair color is also slight brown... i want to wear lens for my marriage which color 2 choose i wud be wearng saree for my mariage

K Kiss 3 months ago

Readers I am really sorry for the late reply but I didn't have access to internet for the past 2 days :(.

@Kripa for your kind of complexion and hair you have a wide range of colours to choose from. It really depends on what type of look you want. If you are more in the mood for drama for for icy grey or baby blue. If you want a more natural and subtle and at the same time sexy transformation, go with colours like green (green has warmth and sexiness at the same time), violet (a touch of innocence), Honey (for a glowing - fierce -tigress like look) and I would suggest that you steer clear of brown.

@Reshmi- It would have helped me to advice you better had I known the colour of your wedding saree. If the wedding saree is more redding I would suggest going for green, it being the best complimentary colour to red. For other colours you can go for honey for a naturally sultry look. Please avoid brown as it makes the face more dull. Did you consider keeping your eyes natural as they are. It is just a suggestion as I think quite a lot about my wedding too and I myself jump from contacts to no contacts and when you really think about it you want to see (years later) photographs of yourself as natural as possible on your wedding day. The makeup will be heavy as it is and with contact lens your eyes will get more tired by the end of the ceremony. The rest of course is up to you. Oh and also avoid blue contacts, especially baby blue on weddings can look ridiculous. Dark blue is alright but then one can't see that colour much. Avoid icy colours like silvery grey or misty grey or baby blue. Hope that helped and don't forget to share my article on facebook if you liked it :D

Hi, my hair is Brown base with highlights of lighter brown, sort of ash blonde but not too light. And I have Asian skin. Not too fair not too dark. I have always been wearing brown colour lens. And I'm getting bored. I want something that is more vibrant but still suits my skin and my hair colour. Please advise.

i just wanna start using contact lens nd i'm really canfused on wat colour 2 use.am dark nd am a nigerian. i av a chocolate brown skin and face. i need a colour dat wuld make me look hot and sexy lyk a celebrity.. i wuld appreciate ur quick response. thank u

K Kiss 2 months ago

@Tasneem:- Thanks for the compliment on my hub. For a first time user you need to go for a colour that will compliment your hair and skin tone so that you continue to experiment with contact lens colours in the future. If you chose a colour for the first time which you end up not liking, it will refrain you from experimenting later on. Green is the perfect colour for a first timer. Make sure the green is not too dark. Grey and sterling grey are colours that I would suggest that you avoid for the time being. Grey is something that can't be worn with anything. You will need a special outfit and makeup to go with it. Hope that helped.

@akshata - with yellow saree green would look great. If you want to pick a green from freshlook's collection then their Sea Green from Freshlook Dimensions or Gem stone green from Freshlook Colorblend. Green contacts are subtle yet very sexy. Alternatively you can go for honey.

@anonymous babe you can go for turquoise or Caribbean blue.

@first timer please read the above comment I left for Tasneem. Go for Green. With your beautiful skin complexion green will give you a very sexy foxy look!! Alternatively you can even go for misty grey which will look smoking hot on you.

I have dark skin and brown hair I recently dyed my hair black and i was hoping to get grey contacts but I'm not sure wether it would suit me I was thinking a warm honey but I'm a first timer

And this article has been very helpful but I'm still confused

Sammie 2 months ago

I also have very dark lashes and

It usually looks like I'm wearing eyeliner but I'm not

K Kiss 2 months ago

Dear Sammie, with dark hair and black hair (now coloured) would go well with grey (just go for a darker shade of grey if you want it to blend or go for lighter grey like ash if you want a striking look).

Just know that almost all colours can be made to suit a person with the right makeup. But with your naturally dark lashes and natural eyeliner like eyes you should be able to pull of grey contacts quite well.

Honey would suit you quite well but remember honey is quite bright and fiery. If that is not the look you are looking for then steer clear of honey. Honey contacts will give you a very tiger like look.C

Hope my response helped :)

Hi, i have hazel eyes and my hair is dark sandy blond and i have medium skin tone (light but go tanning once a week thus making it kinda tan) so average. I want to make my eyes a blue or maybe gray color that looks NATURAL. I'm leaning toward a gray but ive heard good and bad things-maybe freshlooks sterling gray or acuvues sterling gray, or one of the blues. Which would look most natural and flattering on hazel eyes??

hi very helpful note on lences bt im still confused i have lit fair combination skin not so dark or nt so fair i have black hairs and natural black eyes kindly tell me which color of lense suits me i want to wear blue in darker tone what u sugges tell me plz want my eyes incent wide look

K Kiss 2 months ago

PinkAngel: Go for Honey if you highlight or colour hair hair to light brown.

tshap: with tanned hair lighter shades of blue looks striking and very refreshing too. Gives a vibe of someone who visits the beach a lot or goes surfing! Another plus point is that blues and greys sit very well on hazel eyes and almost all types of colours blend well. The blending areas are the opening for the pupil in the contact lenses. Those with dark eyes seem to have a striking contrast with the pupil (which looks bigger than it really is). Like you said there are good and bad things about gray but if I am guessing right, it shouldn't be a problem with your hazel base. Please share this hub with your friends and family on facebook if you liked my advice :)

Nosheen:wearing blues in darker tone is good if you want a subtle change. I once wore Freshlooks blue is one of their darker shades and many people couldn't tell if I was wearing any contacts or not. It just gives a very subtle change in the look. In that case you have nothing to worry about whether it will suit you because it will but you might feel like you just wasted some of your money by buying something that really didn't serve your purpose. We wear contacts to change our look. No need to go dramatic but go for a brighter shade of blue or green. Just put some kohl/kajal when wearing the contacts and you will look great! Do share this hub on your facebook if you liked my advice. Thanks

Hello, I have been wanting to try contact lenses for years but just haven't done it. I think I have an olive to tan skin tone and I have really spunky "rihanna" red hair that I just recently dyed. I want something that would compliment not only my skin tone but something that won't clash with my hair. What is the best one? I was thinking about a hazel?

K Kiss 6 weeks ago

@Sharry : - Brown contacts are very subtle if your original eye colour is black or on the dark side. Then it will suit you naturally. However, if your natural eye colour is light like blue or green or grey, even brown contacts will make a huge difference and it will alter your face entirely.

@Shreyo:- thanks. You seem to have naturally pretty eyes. Curly black lashes surrounding big eyes are an awesome combination. You can choose blue provided that it is not too light or too bright. Go for a mid level blue which will look great with your lashes. Make sure to generously dip your lashes in black mascara for a dramatic effect.

@XxGinaLiciousxX:- One colour for you girl with that awesome shade of red hair- Green (as bright as you get) you will look fantastic. I coloured my hair a number of times into that shade of red and I would always wear my green pair with them. Alternatively you can go for honey but not brown or hazel.

Hope that helped girls. Please share my hub with your friends on Facebook or Twitter Thanks.

Am Dark Brown An I Want To Know What Color Contacts Would Go With Me P.s My eye color is black

Roxanne 3 weeks ago

I dont know where to place myself under these categories. I consider myself brown although I am not African American color, I am more of a recent Freida Pinto color, so I have a hard time picking out whether I'm tan or under "dark skin tones" - my face tends to always be much lighter than the rest of my body, of course I can coat that with foundation, and my hair is black, and my eyes are hooded lids, what color should I get?

My color is like so http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NWJ3c8s8IZ8/TbJBOHlM95I/

Onedirectionluver 2 weeks ago

Hey,

So I found this very helpfull but I just can't seem to indicate my skin colour I mean I'm not ran but I'm not dark. I'm sri lankan, so I guess im Indian but I'm not dark. I have black hair and black eyes and I'm planning on getting colored contacts. It would really help u kinda tell me where my skin colour is:) thank you so much

K Kiss 3 days ago

Slurpee_14 - With dark skin bright green and honey coloured contacts look very good. Avoid icy colours like misty grey.

Roxanne - I would say you fall under the traditional south-east Asian skin tone which is brown or referred to as tan. Freida has a basic south east Asian skin tone and if yours are like her you can go with any colour actually. However, keeping in mind that you have hooded lids you should go with bright colours like turquoise, bright green, even misty grey..any colour that actually shines through ur eyes.

Onedirectionluver - I would have said tan but you already crossed that out. I am not quite sure how to classify it. Sorry can't advice on that point. But if it is of any help please see my comment above to Roxanne for tanned skin.

Hope that helped people. Please share my article with your pals on facebook if it was of any help and feel free to ask further questions or browse through my other articles.
